I Challenge You…

Don’t you love a good contest? To rise to the occasion, test your mettle, throw down the gauntlet, to dare someone to cross the line?

Teddy Roosevelt got it right when he said, (paraphrasing) “The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”

Bill’s Eye blog readers—we will not fail. We will persevere.

I’m just asking for your support for a grant that KET is pursuing. Your support could have a big impact on how much more accessible and transparent the Kentucky state legislature might be in the future. It’s the Knight News Challenge and you can read more about it below.

KET is competing in this year’s Knight News Challenge, which focuses on open government. The Knight News Challenge states their mission as working to accelerate media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information.

KET seeks to develop an open digital platform and apps that provide engaged citizens, advocates, legislators, businesses, journalists, and others immediate and full access to Kentucky legislative proceedings. Mobile and desktop apps will allow users to easily search, watch, read, and share transcripts and live and archived video of legislative coverage and policy debates. Social media, SMS text and email alerts on topics, people, legislation, and more will allow for deeper engagement.

KET encourages you to go to the Knight News Challenge webpage now through March 29 to ask questions and post comments about how our idea would support open government in the Commonwealth.

We believe this innovative resource is necessary in our digital democracy. For example, the apps, which will be fully accessible on mobile devices and computers, will allow you to easily follow a bill through the legislative process. Individuals can also search for specific bills, legislators, meetings, issues and more, creating a tailored service to meet your needs and interests. Lesson plans using live data and legislative coverage also would be developed for educators to use in classrooms.

The winning Knight News Challenge ideas can earn up to $1 million.
