Doc Martin finale

What surprises will occur as season three ends?

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Season three of Doc Martin comes to an end tonight (not to worry, though: season four begins next week!)

In this episode, Martin manages to offend the local vicar, who is due to conduct the good doctor and Louisa’s wedding ceremony, by suggesting he has a drinking problem. In a struggle over a bottle of whisky, the vicar stumbles and fractures his pelvis. As the ambulance takes the vicar the to hospital, Martin is left with the dilemma of finding a replacement vicar with just three hours to go until the wedding.

To make matters worse, pregnant bridesmaid Isobel goes into labor just an hour before the ceremony. Martin is summoned by Louisa, and on a windswept hill top above Portwenn, he delivers a healthy baby boy. But will Martin and Louisa still get to the church on time?

This season three finale of Doc Martin airs Thursday, June 30 at 9/8 pm CT on KET and Friday, July 1 at 8/7 pm CT on KET2.

Nova night

Study how the human brain works tonight with Nova

Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Everyone has heard the saying, “It’s all in your head.” Well, the truth is, it is all in our heads! Make it a night of Nova and Nova scienceNOW and explore why this is.

In the Nova episode “What Are Dreams?” join leading dream researchers and witness the extraordinary experiments they use to investigate the world of sleep.

Delving deep into the thoughts and brains of a variety of dreamers, scientists are asking important questions about the purpose of this mysterious realm we escape to at night. Do dreams allow us to get a good night’s sleep? Do they improve memory? Do they allow us to be more creative? Can they solve our problems or even help us survive the hazards of everyday life?

Then, explore the brain as a whole on Nova scienceNOW, the innovative news magazine designed to help viewers keep up with advances in science and technology.

“How Does the Brain Work?” delves into some pretty heady stuff, examining magic and the brain, artificial intelligence and magnetic mind control. Can we really believe our own eyes? Will machines one day think like us? Can magnetic wands effectively control brain functions and treat depression?

That’s a lot of questions!

This episode of Nova airs Wednesday, June 29 at 9/8 pm CT on KET, followed by this episode of Nova scienceNOW on Wednesday, June 29 at 10/9 pm CT on KET.

Hot sauce, anyone?

Chubby Carrier & The Bayou Swamp Band featured on tonight’s episode of Jubilee—Summertime Blues

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

The fourth episode of KET’s summer program Jubilee—Summertime Blues airs tonight, with perennial Henderson blues fest favorite Chubby Carrier & The Bayou Swamp Band bringing pure Louisiana zydeco fun. The series was recorded at the 2010 W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival in Henderson.

Carrier’s roots in zydeco reach back to his father and grandfather, who both played this type of music native to southwest Louisiana. Carrier was eight years old when he first heard his father’s band practicing at their house.

“I was floored by it, it seemed unbelievable,” Carrier says. “For me as a kid to see that, it was an honor. I wanted to know more about it.”

Carrier’s father and grandfather were accordion players, and he followed in that family tradition. Carrier points out that some people get zydeco and Cajun music confused: zydeco contains more blues, rhythm and blues, soul and gospel; Cajun is more folk, waltz and two-step.

“The fiddle is big in Cajun music,” Carrier says. “The life of the party in zydeco is the accordion and the washboard.”

In this energetic 2010 performance in Henderson, band members traverse the large crowd to interact, while audience members ascend the stage and join the band dancing, singing and playing instruments.

“They’re invited to play in the band, and they’re invited to sing along,” Carrier says, speaking of his audience. “We put on a show.”

Indeed they do. During “Who Stole The Hot Sauce?” a band member walks through the crowd, putting a drop of hot sauce on the tongue of anyone who wants it while Carrier sings, “Who stole my hot sauce? When I catch that crook, he’s gonna drink every drop he took.”

This episode of Jubilee—Summertime Blues airs Tuesday, June 28 at 10/9 pm CT on KET.
