Let the matchmaking begin

Masterpiece Classic‘s “Emma” airs Thursday night

Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010

A fiercely funny four-hour adaptation of Jane Austen’s delightful love story stars Romola Garai (Atonement) as a young woman whose attempts to play Cupid go disastrously awry. Rich, beautiful, and hopelessly self-deluded, Emma Woodhouse can’t help meddling in the romantic life of others while neglecting her own. Jonny Lee Miller (“Endgame,” “Eli Stone”) stars as Emma’s stalwart friend, Mr. Knightley, with Michael Gambon (“Cranford,” Harry Potter) as her doom-obsessed father. “Emma” airs Thursday, Jan. 28 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET2.

“Emma” is followed by Masterpiece Classic encores of “Northanger Abbey,” Austen’s gentle parody of Gothic fiction, and “Persuasion,” which finds Anne Elliot destined for spinsterhood after refusing the proposal of dashing Captain Wentworth.
