During the week of June 2-8, enjoy musical performances during KET’s Bluegrass Week, including the premiere of a new season of Jubilee and Jubilee Live: Festival of the Bluegrass, live coverage of the Lexington event, which is celebrating its 40th year.

New season of Jubilee

First up is the premiere of a new season of Jubilee from the 2012 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Fan Fest in Nashville. A major event in the world of bluegrass music, this is the first time IBMA’s Fan Fest, which yearly features top bluegrass artists, has ever been recorded. The new season, which features more than 40 performances, premieres Tuesday, June 4 at 8/7 pm on KET and Saturday, June 8 at 11/10 pm on KET2.

The season premiere showcases performances from bluegrass legends Bobby Osborne & The Rocky Top X-Press and The Del McCoury Band.

Jubilee Live: Festival of the Bluegrass live from Lexington

Then, on Thursday, begins Jubilee Live: Festival of the Bluegrass, live musical performances of the 2013 Festival of the Bluegrass from the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. For three nights, KET will air live from the festival, featuring performances from the main stage and interviews with festival organizers, artists, community leaders and more.

Jubilee Live: Festival of the Bluegrass airs Thursday, June 6 beginning at 7:30/6:30 pm on KETKY; Friday, June 7 beginning at 2:30/1:30 pm on KET2; and Saturday, June 8 beginning at 2:30/1:30 pm on KET. It will also stream live online at KET.org/live.

KET presents live coverage of the Festival of the Bluegrass as part of Lexington’s Best of Bluegrass (BOB) event, a first-ever, weeklong celebration of bluegrass music and culture (June 3-8), culminating in the festival. KET will also be recording the BOB concert from the band Appalatin, performing at Natasha’s Bar & Bistro, for a Kentucky Muse program airing in the fall. The six-member band uses acoustic instrumentation to combine Latin music with Appalachian folk music.

Sam Bush & Friends

Next on Jubilee from the International Newgrass Festival: Sam Bush & Friends

Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012

Newgrass founder Sam Bush joins a variety of performers onstage on the next edition of Jubilee, recorded live at the third-annual International Newgrass Festival in Bowling Green, KY. The program premieres Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 8/7 pm on KET.

Bush has helped expand the horizons of bluegrass music, fusing it with jazz, rock, blues, funk and other styles. He’s an in-demand musician who has played with Emmylou Harris, Bela Fleck, Lyle Lovett, Garth Brooks, and more. In this program, Bush is joined onstage by fellow musicians from this season of Jubilee, including the Greencards’ Kym Warner, Ryan Cavanaugh, Dread Clampitt’s Kyle Ogle, Kenny Oliverio, Boulder Saunders, and Ricky Burch and Curtis Burch of The Curtis Burch Band.

In the 1970s, Bush, along with musicians Courtney Johnson, John Cowan and Curtis Burch, joined together as New Grass Revival and incorporated contemporary music elements in their performances and recordings. Since their music wasn’t bluegrass, technically, they coined the term “newgrass music,” which quickly became popular.

Jubilee: Sierra Hull & Highway 111

Next on Jubilee from the International Newgrass Festival: Sierra Hull

Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012

Rising mandolin star Sierra Hull and her band Highway 111 perform on the next edition of Jubilee, recorded live at the third-annual International Newgrass Festival in Bowling Green, KY. The program premieres Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 8/7 pm CT on KET and Saturday, Oct. 6 at 11/10 pm CT on KET2.

In her Jubilee performance, Hull shows why she’s considered one of the top young mandolin players in bluegrass today. She calls her mandolin performances “playing with a point to prove,” and her singing as “doing the songs justice.”

When Hull, native of Byrdstown, Tenn., was 11 years old, bluegrass legend Alison Krauss called her with an invitation to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. At the age of 13, Hull was signed to Rounder Records, and she released her debut album, Secrets, just three years later at the age of 16.
