KET offers intriguing programs for a week-long celebration of America’s birthday!
A Capitol Fourth
Barry Manilow headlines A Capitol Fourth, the top-rated musical and fireworks extravaganza for America’s birthday party! And Emmy Award-winning television personality Tom Bergeron leads an all-star cast in a patriotic evening of more musical performances, topped off by the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation: Thursday, July 4 at 8/7 pm on KET and 9:30/8:30 pm on KET2.
The Statue of Liberty
Find out how much Lady Liberty means to Americans in Ken Burns’ 1985 documentary The Statue of Liberty on Tuesday, July 2 at 9/8 pm on KET. Narrated by David McCullough, the film traces the development of the monument, from its conception to its fascinating and often controversial construction to its final dedication.
The story of Mount Rushmore’s creation is as bizarre and wonderful as the monument itself. It’s a tale of a hyperactive, temperamental artist whose talent and determination propelled the project, even as his ego and obsession threatened to tear it apart. Mount Rushmore: American Experience airs Sunday, July 7 at 3/2 pm on KET.
Lewis & Clark
In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned his secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to lead a scientific expedition to explore and map the vast Louisiana Territory he had just purchased from France. Lewis asked an old friend, William Clark of Louisville’s founding Clark family, to serve as co-captain. Ken Burns’ new two-part film, Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, traces the route of their dramatic journey from mid-America to the Pacific and explores the extraordinary friendship between these two very different men: Tuesdays, July 9 & 16 at 9/8 pm on KET and Sundays, July 14 & 21 at 4/3 pm on KET2.
